Inspiration From History…

CROATOAN
Originally from Levittown NY, I currently reside somewhere along the coast in California with my wife/co-author Helen.
A lot of my creativity was born from my lifelong love of science fiction and horror. As a child I grew up on the original Dark Shadows, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Doctor Who (which I still follow) and Anime.
A few of my favorite authors are HP Lovecraft, Jane Austen, Robert Asprin, Jodi Lynn Nye, Stephen King, Richard Matheson, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Edgar Allan Poe, and so many more.
However, I do not spend all our time sitting behind a desk writing. I like to get out and try new things. We also like to explore new places, sometimes with family or friends. I've gotten plenty of ideas thanks to these adventures. I like to draw from personal experience because I feel it lends a bit of authenticity to a story and its characters. Which is probably why Helen and I still love to attend conventions which involve sci-fi, fantasy, anime, comics, you name it. Yes, we are Geeks and proud of it.
Last night Helen and I finished the final story for our upcoming anthology! Thank you! Thank you! You’re all being too kind. But today’s post is not to talk about the anthology itself, as much as what went into making it. How did it differ from writing full-length novels? Was it easier? Was it harder?…
Just wanted to apologize to everyone for not posting much lately. College is under way and I’m carrying 16 units altogether. So far 5 of my classes are slamming me with lots of reading homework and weekly quizzes. Just 4 of the classes alone is giving me over 100 pages to reading a week, plus…
So, one of the first things I often hear from people when they hear I have a book coming out is, “Who’s your publisher?” There’s long been a stigma to self-publishing, and until recently, it was deserved. A writer had to buy a few thousand copies to get it printed at reasonable rates and generally…
*NOTE: This review covers the audiobook version (which is unabridged), so there will be references to the performance by the voiceover actor Marc Thompson) As a big fan of the Star Wars animated series “Rebels”, I was always fascinated by the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn. He was clearly one of the most formidable opponents…
Book review time again. Today I wanted to share with you my review on what I consider one of THE best collections of vampire stories ever compiled. It covers some of the earliest vampire tales known and finishes with more modern ones from the 1980’s. With the many takes on vampires we see these…
Thought I’d share this little piece of inspiration for all my fellow indie authors today. These really insightful thoughts come from author Kate Brauning, a woman who really knows about publishing and has been a part of it for a long time…

Awesome post, Allan. I taught Virginia History and Language Arts in VA for six years. Your idea of taking these historical mysteries as a springboard for writing is awesome. THANKS!
Glad you like the idea. I’ve been finding it helpful to add a feeling of reality to story by drawing in some actual history.
You have been nominated for the ABC Award. You may pick it up at: http://chasingtheperfectmoment.com/awards/
If you choose not to that’s okay. Just know you were thought of!
