Yesterday I had an epiphany about my writing and the entire Para-Earth Series… it’s been a collaboration all along.  From “The Bridge” to “The Ship” to “The Vampyre Blogs -Coming Home”, the entire journey has been one gigantic collaboration with my wife/best friend Helen.  And I am planning on putting her name on the first two books.

Why didn’t I do this sooner?  And how did I not realize it was a collaboration all along?  Because I thought a collaboration strictly meant two people were doing the actual writing, but that’s not the only way a collaboration works.  Ideas, suggestions, helping shape characters, plot, settings, events… all of that goes into a collaboration as well.

So even though I did all the writing in “The Bridge” and “The Ship”, Helen gave me so much guidance like helping shape the characters personalities, questioning their actions, being my sounding-board for ideas I had but didn’t know where to go with them until she suggested details or options I never considered which suddenly put the story back on track again… you name it.  To me, she has been just as much a part of those books as I’ve been.

Now, some of you might be wondering how did this realization come to me?  Well, it had been bouncing around in my mind for some weeks now but yesterday is when it finally clicked into place for me.  As many of you should know by now, Helen just recently got offered a job at Santa Cruz County.  Well, yesterday was her Orientation Day and she officially starts work on Monday as an Accounting Technician (I’m so proud).

Well, when my day ended we were driving home and I started sharing with her that I was working on a new short story for our other blog “The Vampyre Blogs – Private Edition” (where we post brand new short stories involving characters from our book “The Vampyre Blogs – Coming Home” Link: https://thevampyreblogs.blogspot.com/   *NOTE: Characters from “The Bridge” and “The Ship” have also appeared there and will be showing up again soon so keep an on that site).   Some time ago I had decided that Lisa (one of the main characters) was a gifted psychic.

*Note: Lisa is often mistaken for a Goth, but she merely loves old clothing styles and vibrant colors.  She’s actually into clothing design and cool make-up, including special effects*

Mind you she is not nearly as strong as Alex, Cassandra, or the Baby from “The Bridge” and “The Ship”.  Lisa’s talents show up in the form of glimpses into the near future in dreams, as well as being sensitive to strong emotions both past and present, but she’s only starting to realize it.

Anyway,  I was working on a short story with her that takes place between the end of “The Vampyre Blogs – Coming Home” and its sequel “The Vampyre Blogs – Family Ties” which is currently  being written along with several other projects.

*SPOILERS FOR THE SHORT STORY AHEAD: Lisa’s been having dreams where she senses the danger from the first book is not completely over and that more darkness lies ahead for not only her and those she loves, but the entire town where she and Nathan live.  But that was as far as I had gotten when Helen suddenly sprang to life and suggested a scene in the waking world that indicates there is indeed a threat.  A certain modern-day life form, that is similar to the Para-Earth life-form that makes our character Nathan a vampyre, are fleeing the area.  Upon seeing this, Lisa realizes there is something coming prompting her to see if Nathan has returned or not.  This will tie into the opening scene of the 2nd novel in the Vampyre Blogs section of the Para-Earth Series.

END OF SPOILERS:

As soon as Helen made this suggestion the rest of the story came to me in a wave.  I could clearly see the path forward and immediately asked her to help give more life to the characters of Lisa and her best friend Marisa who also will appear in the story.  She naturally agreed, having taken a crack at writing both girls recently for a story in our upcoming anthology “The Vampyre Blogs – One Day At A Time” coming in January 2018.

Now, this has been just one of many examples of how a collaboration can work when it comes to writing.  I have many more to share, including one with my other Collaborator Rich Caminit which I will share in my next post.  Plus others that I will continue to share down the road.  For now, I’m going to leave you all for now, before this entry turns into the length of a novella.  But please give thoughts to other forms of collaboration you may have encountered and please share them with all of us in the comment section below.  As I’ve already said, collaborations take many forms and the roles each collaborator takes is not simply one but many, and this is why I feel collaborations are something that should sometimes be embraced whole-heartedly.

And on a final note, don’t be afraid to share the credit for a project.  As Samuel Goldwyn the great movie producer once said…

When someone does something good, applaud! You will make two people happy.

Until next time, take care and keep writing my friends.

Happy New Year 2015

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

If you’re reading this I’ll take it that you survived 2014 and are a glutton for punishment because you’re still reading what I have to say here.  Bless your hearts.

With that said, I’m going to try and start the year off on a good note here by posting the opening section of “The Door”, which will be the third book in my Para-Earth Series.  This time Alex, Veronica, Cassie and Julie are back together to face threats old and new.

The white-haired man known only as Z has returned, along with the fragment of the creature our heroes helped destroy in “The Bridge”.  For those who read book 2 “The Ship” we saw Z and his companion help protect Cassandra from the threat that arose from the deeps, but it wasn’t out of kindness.  He has plans of his own for her and now they’re about to bear fruit.

But the girl is guarded by her friends Alex and Veronica, as well as her lover Julie.  Plus of course there’s the ghostly Brandon who has watched over the girl since the day she was born.  However, Z has allies of his own.  Betrayal and danger await from the most unexpected quarters.

With all that said, allow me to post the first preliminary sketch for the cover, along with the opening sequence of “The Door”.  I hope you enjoy, but remember one thing, ‘You enter at your own risk…’

THE DOOR

by

Allan Krummenacker

(Copyright 2015)

The door stood in a hillside near an open field.  Grass and weeds had long ago swallowed the stonework that surrounded it, leaving just the portal itself visible.   The dark wood looked strange and sinister.  In the grain one could almost see contorted faces crying out for release.

Few people came here, if ever.  But now tall figure appeared with a long cape of jet black approached.  He had long white hair and wore a black frock coat.  He strode up to the door and halted.  After studying the vegetation around the edges, his eyes fixed on the portal itself.  A smile slowly crept over his hawkish features as he turned away.

Strolling along the slope he continued to study the plants along the way.  The changes he’d noticed around the doorway were getting more prominent the further he moved away from the portal.  Eventually he reached one section where the flora had become almost sinister in appearance.  “Oh yes,” he whispered and listened closely to the silence that seemed to have settled in this area.

Suddenly, his cape began to billow and flap even though there was no wind.

The man stiffened and leapt some fifty feet straight up.  The folds of his cloak spreading like gigantic bat wings as he descended onto a thick branch of a neighboring tree.  Landing with the grace of an eagle, he bent his head and stared downwards.

Smoke-like hands had shot out of hillside itself, reaching and grasping at the space he’d just vacated.  With growing satisfaction he watched the ghostly appendages waved about in an almost pitiful manner, knowing their quarry had eluded them yet again.  Finally, they slowly sank back into the dried leaves that covered the ground, and disappeared from sight.

Stepping off the branch he landed nimbly and proceeded to move away just in case the offending appendages tried to make another attempt to accost him.  But nothing happened, much to his delight.

His cape fluttered briefly in the still air.

“Yes, they have become much weaker,” he murmured as if answering a question only he could hear.  “We’ll start keeping closer tabs on the girl.”

Once more the black fabric moved of its own accord as if in response.

“Yes, keeping watch over her would be difficult for us.  The son of Jerome has been watching her more closely than ever after that business on the other side of the continent.   But I have other allies who will keep us apprised of her movements,” he told his garment.  “They are already in position as a matter of fact.  Thanks to them I know Cassandra is in Connecticut right now, visiting the very friends who helped kill your parent.”

This time the ebony shroud did not move.

He was not surprised.  The being was primitive in many ways.  Loyalty to its progenitor was not part of the creature’s nature.  Then again, it wasn’t his either.  After all he did share a lineage with his intended target.  He’d even orchestrated her birth, but only to make sure the bloodline was as close and true to that of the original ‘key’.

I’m looking for honest reviews for my new paranormal/mystery novel “THE SHIP”.

So far I’ve had 4 reviews on Amazon (all of them 5 star ratings), but I’ve only had one on Smashwords and over at Goodreads.com.  I really would like to see more, since most prospective readers like to see what others are saying about a new book.

So, in order to get them I’m offering 5 free E-Book copies through Smashwords. You’ll be able to get your copy via a coupon I code I will be supplying any volunteers with.

For those who are not completely familiar with Smashwords, they have the following e-book formats avialable: (Nook, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and PDF). You’ll have 1 month to read the book and provide a review on Smashwords and if you happen to have a Goodreads account, I would love to see it posted there as well.

BACK COVER SYNOPSIS OF THE NOVEL:
Cassandra Elliott is a billionaire heiress, who has just come out of the closet.  She is also a powerful psychic who has seen incredible and terrifying things.

In fact, just two weeks ago she and her new girlfriend Julie Cloudfoot, survived a horrific battle with a creature from a parallel reality, where evolution took a decidedly different turn.

As a result of that encounter the two of them have come to Santa Cruz California to bury Julie’s uncle who fell to the creature, and to see if their new relationship will work out.  But an old adversary is stalking them.  A white haired man with plans for Cassandra.  However, before he can make a move, a new threat appears.  A legendary ghost ship arises from the sea and marks Cassandra as it’s next target.

Soon Cassie and Julie find themselves fighting not only for their loves, but to keep from being separated forever…

Send me a private message if you are interested. Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from some of you.

Take care and keep writing.

Some Books Suggestions…

Here are a couple of book suggestions that may interest you all.  These are books by authors I’ve met along my writing journey.  I’ll be posting more suggestions in the near future as well.  I understand that not all the books suggested will appeal to everyone, but helping fellow authors gain more exposure is just as important as getting my own books to be known.  I know how difficult it is for Indie Authors and the struggles we all face.  So please take a peak and help spread the word.

Today I have two very different offerings for your perusal, that still share a common theme.  Psychic phenomenon and life after death…

For my fellow Jane Austen fans who can’t get enough of Elizabeth and Darcy, here’s  a clever knew take on their continuing story…

http://www.amazon.com/Darcys-Last-Promise-Medea-Yorba-ebook/dp/B00G5R4QT8/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_d_3

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet’s beloved characters and deliciously romantic love story have captured imaginations for roughly the last two hundred years. But the story did not end there. Elizabeth receives Darcy’s Last Promise in his final moments in that lifetime. He vows that somehow he will find Elizabeth and that they will be together again. This promise is not as simple as it sounds and the journey takes them through misunderstanding, desperation, and perseverance. The story is full of humor, hope, frustration, pain and joy. As an added twist, they are not the only original Pride and Prejudice characters who show up in the 21st century. Watch for the sequel Darcy’s Last Promise Tested

And for those who’ve ever wondered what is was like to be a real-live psychic,  here’s a book that let’s you see through the eyes of one….

http://www.amazon.com/Shining-Within-Me-Communications-Afterlife-ebook/dp/B00K8SZU40/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402074059&sr=1-1&keywords=the+shining+within+me+freddie+rivera

The Shining Within Me: Communications From the Afterlife: Foreword by renowned psychic medium Concetta Bertoldi

This true account of the life of Psychic Medium Freddie Rivera will leave you spellbound and in awe of what lies beyond the physical experience we have here on earth.

Freddie was born and raised in New York City. The beginning of his life was a difficult one, and it only became more challenging as he got older. Freddie was born a natural medium, meaning his abilities became fully active at age six. As a small child, he suffered and endured frightening and confusing paranormal activity. He saw, heard and felt what most adults would find unfathomable. He doesn’t hold back on the negative aspects of being a psychic medium. One of his first frightening experiences was when he saw a “Grim Reaper” like spirit at age six.

He had one experience so frightening that he shut down and was forced to face a lonely, almost unbearable existence through his road into adulthood. He had nowhere to turn; society did not acknowledge much less even speak about the things that Freddie was going through.

When he was old enough to go out on his own, he joined the army and traveled and was exposed to places that were almost too much for him to bear; sensitive as he was to supernatural activity. He takes you through the rough road in the jungles in Panama and the freezing temperatures at the glaciers in Alaska. He experienced a Nazi Concentration Camp, on a level that was different from the rest of his fellow soldiers.

Freddie had profound yet misunderstood experiences that he himself tried to ignore and keep at a distance. He was unaware of the true meaning of his abilities and was on his own with the overwhelming activity within and around him. He felt he could not share the occurrences in his life as he was afraid other people would think he was insane.

On Freddie’s path to self-discovery, he finds himself in conflict with the true calling he was not yet aware he possessed. There are areas in the book that are very frightening, and leaves us to wonder. The unknown is most frightening with lack of knowledge. Freddie learns to understand and face it head on. He learns what he really is capable of.

You will journey with him while he finds himself and what made him who he is today. When Freddie discovered the true meaning of his gifts, he also discovered his mission in life and his life’s calling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good job, Rookie, June 19, 2013
This review is from: The Bridge (Para-Earth Series) (Kindle Edition)

Kudos go to Allan Krummenacker for his first novel “The Bridge.” The storyline is an intriguing balance of wit and suspense, with a cadence that flows nicely, making it an easy read. There is never a dull moment as Krummenacker keeps the reader wanting to know more about each event that takes place. I would like to see more descriptive language used in future works by this author, but overall I look forward to following his career and seeing how his craft develops.

The final tally is in and 365 people took advantage of the chance to get the Kindle version of my paranormal/mystery novel “THE BRIDGE” for free.  Hey, a reader for every day of the year… chuckle.

I’ve never done a free-book promo on Amazon before, so anyone with experience please let me know if this is a good number.  I think so, but I like to hear other people’s thoughts.

Now I’m sure one of the big questions on the minds of some of you is, “Why did you give your book away for free?  Don’t you want to make some money?”

The answer is simple.  I wanted to increase my sales.  Now I know this sounds like a contradiction, but hear me out.  To date, only 100 copies of my novel had sold before this giveaway.  And about 1/2 of those were actual sales over six months.  I’ve had 10 reviews on Amazon and about 15 on Smashwords.  Not bad numbers, but certainly not earth-shattering.  I’ve had family and friends helping promote the book throughout their social networks.  I’ve done press releases, sent out free copies to newspapers and radio stations.  My sales ranking on Smashwords was impressive, but the sales were still not coming as strongly as I’d like.  Why?

Not many people have ever heard of me.  I’ve got ONE book to my name out there, just one.  I’m still building my reputation and a following.  In this day and age, a lot of people are very choosy about what they buy, even in e-books.  So those who sell their works for .99 cents or less have a better chance at being grabbed up.  Especially if you have a good tagline and cover.  But sometimes even that’s not enough.  Word of mouth is truly the biggest and greatest weapons we have to get our names out there.  And that only happens if we get our work into the hands of more readers.

Now, I’ve read (in a number of places) that authors who’ve done the free e-book promos see increases in sales within the weeks/months that follow.  Readers get hooked on what they’ve read and tell family, friends, and people in their social networks about it and get them excited enough to get their own copies.  In turn they may fall in love with the book and tell even more people about it, thus perpetuating sales and building the author’s reputation.

So now I’ve taken the plunge.  Now all I can do is wait and see what kind of results happen.  I’ve already heard from one or two people who took advantage of the giveaway and was delighted to hear them say, “I don’t usually read this genre but the story has already sucked me in.  I’m going to want to read the next one…”  I’ve been told this before by other reviewers as well, which gives me hope for the future of my books.  But more importantly, I’m hoping they will spread the word and get others to check it out.

I’ll keep you all posted on what happens next.  As I said way back when I first started this blog, I’m going to share this journey with you all.  My ups and downs, so hopefully you can avoid some of the pitfalls I landed up in.  Success or failure, we learn from them.  Hopefully, you can learn from mine.

In the meantime, the price has gone back to $1.49 which is still 1/2 off the usual price for the book.  So if you haven’t gotten a copy yet or want to get one for someone else there’s still time to get it at 50% off.  Have a great day…

Okay I haven’t said anything about “The Ship” lately so I thought I’d bring you all up to date on what’s happening on that front.  The news is that there’s been a lot of writing and rewriting of scenes as I try to get the first draft done.  As I’ve mentioned before in a previous post, I find writing the 2nd book more slow at times, but the quality of what I’m creating is better overall.  Because I know some of what to watch out for.  Are the characters behaving like themselves?  Am I making the motivations for their actions clear?  Is this believable? Are things easy to follow and not confusing for the reader?  Am I doing a good job introducing and re-introducing the main characters for both previous readers and those who are new to the series?

Usually, a lot of this would be caught in the second and third drafts.  But from my perspective, a lot of this has make sense to ME before I can expect my readers to follow it.  And if what I’ve done isn’t working for me, there’s a problem.  I’m one of those author’s who says, “Hey, this part does not jibe with what I’ve got going on over here.  This has to be fixed now!”    As you can tell I’m one those people who can’t leave it as is and just redo it later.   I sometimes feel like I’m the character Sheldon Cooper from “The Big Bang Theory”.  Which would probably explain why whenever I complete a really good scene I yell “BAZINGA!”

Luckily, I’m not on a tight schedule.  I don’t plan on releasing “The Ship” until the end of September or beginning of October later this year.   However, in spite of this, I still want to really get a lot of  this story done right the first time.  And I’m taking extra measures to make sure the final product surpasses the original in quality.  I’m adding a few more Beta-Readers, and grammar editors for a start.  From there, I’ll be getting some professional editing done as well.  I’ve already got the book cover ready and you can see down below this post.  This saves some time down the road and is one of the perks of being an artist as well as an author.

Another added benefit to this plan is that I’ll have some down time between waiting to hear back from beta-readers and grammar checkers.  During that period, I’ll working on book number three, “The Door”.  I’ll also focus on “The Vampyre Blogs” as well.  Hopefully this will mean a shorter wait time for my readers between future releases.  At least that’s what  I’m hoping for.

That’s all for now.  See you all again real soon.  Take care and have a great week everyone.
