When did you write your first book?

I wrote and illustrated my first book in grade school. My elementary school had this contest called “Calbery”. The term “Calbery” was derived from the names of the Caldecott and Newberry Awards. Students wrote and illustrated their books each year. The winners received awards and the winning books were sent on to compete with other students from surrounding elementary schools. It was a big deal and I looked forward to making my book each year. I still have the ribbons and certificates in my writing box that’s followed me from place-to-place. That deep-seeded passion for writing shadowed me through life, got pushed to back burner, but surfaced later on when my boys were young. I wrote my first women’s fiction manuscript about ten years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun.

How long did it take to write your first book?

To be honest, I’m not sure how long it took to write that “first” full length manuscript. It’s still sitting in a binder on my shelf. Probably a year or so. Maggie’s Way is a different story, though. Maggie’s Way was my debut novel and I completed that manuscript in about three months.

What was your motivation to write your first book?

Cancer was my catalyst. Being published was on my life’s list of things to do, so I buckled down upon being diagnosed. I put all my other projects to the side and let new characters drive my stories. When I began writing Maggie Abernathy and Chloe McIntyre, I found my voice. Within a year’s time, I’d written first drafts for the three books in my Montana Bound Series. (I’m happy to report, it’s been five years since radiation and I’m cancer free. Grateful!)

What is the best thing about being a writer?

     Connecting with readers, most definitely!

What is the worst thing about being a writer?

The characters that won’t leave my head until I entertain their story. It’s very difficult for me to turn off my brain, even if I’m exhausted.

Do you ever think of the next book whilst writing?

     All. The. Time.

What are some of your favorite books on writing?

  • On Writing by Steven King
  • the 90-day novel by Alan Watt
  • Storytelling Made Easy by Michael Hauge

What are you working on now?

I’m finishing a Women’s Fiction short story with paranormal elements. It’s in the final stages of editing and it’ll be out mid-June 2018. Here’s the blurb:

Burdened by heartache, can a whisper from beyond give middle-aged Paula Murphy the courage to just pedal?

Coming back to her Bay View summer home in northern Michigan means more than planning beach picnics and working in her daughter-in-law’s bicycle shop. Her avoidance to embrace her grown son’s death isn’t the only tribulation weighing on this self-reliant social worker’s mind. Reluctant to believe the unfathomable, Paula Murphy’s world is turned upside down when she’s reunited with the only man she’s ever loved.

“Favorite read this summer”

BySimoneon August 16, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition

Favorite read this summer! Filled with murder mysteries and British wittiness that kept me laughing all throughout the adventure. Haven’t found a book with good dialogue and a sense of humor for a while.

Overall, I’m pleased with the mix of romance + adventure + mystique put together in ‘The Bridge’.

Happy to see that there are writers who still put so much time and effort in to character development and story.

For those of you who didn’t know, I run another blog called “The Vampyre Blogs – Private Edition” which just passed the 10,000 view mark!

Here’s the link for anyone who’d like to check it out:  http://thevampyreblogs.blogspot.com/

I started this blog with the sole purpose of introducing the idea of a science-fiction vampyre who was truly similiar to the traditional vampires of lore. Nathan tries to avoid sunlight (although he can step out on cloudy and rainy days, and can actually walk in the light but only if he’s loaded up on blood in advance since sunlight can dry him out to the point of becoming dust). He sleeps in the ground (because certain nutrients his body needs can only be absorbed from there). And he can shape-shift becoming a horde of rats, bats, dogs, mist, grow wings… but is restricted to how big he can do these things. He cannot make more than what there is of his physical being (law of mass). And of course, he is extremely long-lived.

The blog has been chronicling short stories about his long life and some of the people he has met over the last 150 years such as Mae West

the Marx Brothers,

Silent film stars like Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle and Buster Keaton

Ballroom dancer turned heart-throb Rudolph Valentino

And many others he worked with in Vaudeville before they became movie stars, along with others whose lives he’s touched such as victims of the Nazi Holocaust and simple everyday people. There are also entries from the supporting cast who allow you to see Nathan through their eyes. Their stories show many sides to him and why he has come to be a guardian angel who has watched over not only them but in some cases their parents, grandparents.

To date there are over 41 short and somewhat longer stories on the blog, with many more to come. I plan on bundling some of the stories next Christmas as an anthology, since there are so many entries on the blog for people to wade through these days.

In the meantime, please share the blog link with everyone you know and then help them to check out Nathan’s first full-length novel story “The Vampyre Blogs – Coming Home” where he comes back to his hometown Pointer, West Virginia. He has come back many times but this time its to stay to save the manor he called home from the wrecking ball, as well as the 1000 acres of pristine land which would fall prey to ruthless lumber companies and coal mining corporations.

Its a lonely homecoming, as far as he knows, but someone has been waiting for him to come back. Someone who saw him leave to fight in the Civil War back in 1862 and a year later died in his arms shortly after his transformation which occurred in a Para-Earth where he encountered two strange lifeforms. One which kept him alive, while the other wanted him destroyed… and still does. In fact, the latter has found its way into this reality and is now closing in on Pointer to finish him off once and for all for he’s the only force that can keep it from absorbing all the dead in this world, even if it has to make more people dead to complete the job.

You can find the novel both in e-book and trade paperback form at Amazon, Barnes and Noble:

More About Gifting E-books…

A short while ago, I posted about gifting e-books and how simple it was.  For those who missed that entry, I’ll briefly recap the basic idea here.  When one goes to Barnes and Noble or Amazon, you have the option of ‘gifting’ an e-book to someone and having a notice sent to their e-mail that they have a new book waiting for them.  The e-mail will also provide a link so that person can claim their gift.  Pretty straightforward and simple right?  Of course it is.  But there’s also an added feature that allows you to determine when that e-mail goes out to the recipient.  You can schedule the day that e-mail goes out so they can be notified of the present on a specific day such as a birthday…

Christmas…

Hannukah…

or whatever the special occasion is.

*To see the full entry click here: http://allankrummenacker.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-holiday-season-is-coming-and-you.html

However, there was one little feature I did not mention at the time I posted that entry and that is, any sales made as gifts will NOT be reflected in your sales report.

Why?  Because until the gift is actually claimed by the recipient the sale is not considered FINALIZED.  I only found out about this recently myself when a person who had won a copy of “The Vampyre Blogs – Coming Home” in a poetry contest run by my fellow author/blogger Aurora Jean Alexander (blog link: https://aurorajalexander.wordpress.com/).  I knew the sale had taken place from my end and that an e-mail had been sent to the recipient informing them the book was waiting.  But after several days I saw no sign of the sale on my KDP Report.  This confused me and as the weeks progressed I still did not see the sale show up, even though when I had ‘gifted’ someone an e-book previously the sale showed up rather quickly.

Puzzled, I got into contact with Amazon and was informed that until the gift was claimed the sale was not done and would not show up in the report.  I am following up with Aurora Jean to have her get in contact with the recipient to check their e-mail, specifically their ‘Spam’ filter, so they can claim their prize.

But this experience was an eye-opener for me and based on the number of thanks and kudos I got from fellow authors about my article on gifting e-books, I felt it important to share this new piece of information here.  I recently ran a 50% off sale on all the e-books in my Para-Earth Series and did not see much sales happening at all.  Then I remembered, I had mentioned in my advertising the benefits of ‘scheduling’ when the books should arrive and will be waiting until Christmas and Hannukah to see if sales were actually much better than I’d thought.

So the lesson here is patience my friends.  I still highly recommend gifting e-books and that all writers should mention the scheduling feature of when the book is to arrive.  Just don’t be discouraged if sales don’t seem to be picking up right away.  They may be waiting in the wings to surprise you especially around this holiday season.

So until next time.  Take care, be safe as you shop, and keep writing.

Recently, I tried to get some new reviews for my two novels on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.  I even offered free Read-2-Review copies of the books to anyone who wanted to do a review.  The results… not a single bite.

I couldn’t believe it.  Giving away “FREE” copies of a book in exchange for an honest review is usually one of the very best methods known to get some reviews for a book.  But I wasn’t getting any takers.  In fact I actually heard back from a few people who had read the books and loved them.  Yet when I asked if they would be kind enough to leave a review this is what I kept hearing from a number of them..

“I love to read, but I don’t know what to say in if someone asks me to review their book…”

Does this sound familiar to anyone else out there?  If it does, don’t be embarrassed.  A lot of people feel that way.  Some don’t know what to put down because they see all these other reviews that are like several paragraphs long and go into great detail about the structure of the story, the plot, etc.  Or perhaps you just don’t have a lot of time to sit down and think, much less write up a big ole review.

These are all valid excuses.  But not every review has to be several paragraphs long.  Even the simplest review can be just two or three sentences.  And of course you’ll be asked to give a star rating usually on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being (why did I bother) and 5 being (dear God I want to read more like this).

While you may feel like you cannot convey all you want to say in just a couple of sentences, but that rating and a few words can make a world of difference as to whether that book becomes a hit or not.  Every review added to a book can make it a sensation that spreads across the nation and even the oceans.  Most book buyers want to know what the book is about, which is the writer’s responsibility to convey in their synopsis.  But buyers also want to know what other people thought of the book, especially since we’re all so spoiled for choice these days thanks to Indie Authors, Kindle, Nook and other e-reader devices.

20-30 reviews, even if half or more of them are just a couple of sentences long can help push that book you just finished and fell in love with, to great heights.  The more reviews the better for the author and the book.  Amazon and other places base a book’s popularity through a logarithmic system that is based on the number of reviews a book is given.  If the book has a lot of reviews and ratings they’ll suggest the book to other buyers with similar interests creating more sales.

But if a book only has a handful of reviews, they won’t do much with it.  It’s not the length of the review but how many and how favorable they are.  So if you really want to see an author or a book get the recognition you think it deserves, please go ahead and leave a rating and just a couple of sentences.  The power to make or break an author and their works is in your hands.

So please, support your favorite authors and books by leaving reviews as well as spreading the word about them throughout your networks.  You could be helping someone become the next Stephen King or JK Rowling.  Remember, without readers, we authors are nothing.

Thanks so much for tuning in and please keep writing.

All good things must come to an end and my week-long $0.99 cent deal is no exception…

How time flies!  But never fear, everyone still has a chance to take advantage of this sale.  Both “THE BRIDGE” and “THE SHIP”, the first and second books in my paranormal/mystery series, are available in all e-book formats and countries for just $0.99 cents a piece until midnight.

*So please spread the word to others and claim your own copies before the clock strikes midnight here in California*

“THE BRIDGE” Book 1 in the Para-Earth Series:

Alex Hill buried his psychic talents for eighteen years. But with the scream of tires and twisting metal all this changes.

His girlfriend, Police Sergeant Veronica Ross, is nearly run down by two teenagers leaving her depressed and troubled. After calming her down they get a call from the Coroner’s office and learn that both the driver and passenger of the wrecked car had already been dead for almost twelve hours before the accident. Furthermore, they hadn’t been killed in any vehicle accident, the pair had been drowned.

Upon hearing this Alex feels his powers stirring again and goes with Veronica to see the coroner to learn more. But, as soon as they reach the doors of the Morgue he is psychically assaulted by an unknown force.

Taking the attack as a warning, he tries to resist getting involved further. But, his talents soon lead him directly to the place where the teenagers died. It is the stream underneath an old stone bridge that is supposedly haunted by the White Lady.

But the real problem for Alex is the fact that both the bridge and stream are on the Graham Estate. The very property he is now representing as a real estate agent.

Soon the body count begins to rise, and each new death is somehow attached to the stream. And as the only person with full access to the estate, suspicion starts to fall on Alex. Especially when it’s discovered he does not have a solid alibi for any of the incidents.

Now, in order to clear his name and learn what force is behind all the killings, Alex must decide whether or not to embrace the very abilities he shunned.

“THE SHIP” Book 2 in the Para-Earth Series:

What starts as a simple surfing lesson, turns into a struggle for survival for billionaire heiress Cassandra Elliott and her new love interest the Seneca shamaness Julie Cloudfoot.

Cassandra is knocked off her board by an unseen assailant that leaves a terrifying gash in her wetsuit, along with a small red mark on her leg. Soon, terrifying visions of a ghost ship begin haunting the heiress’ dreams. She begins to feel strangely drawn to the sea whenever a strange fog bank appears in the distance.

Is something hiding within the miasma, and what connection does it have to the legendary “Lost Colony of Roanoke”, and the tribe of Tuscarora Indians, that Julie is distantly related to…
