Tag Archive: entries

As you all know this blog has been undergoing a serious renovation for the past few weeks. The reason for this is the fact that I recently looked over some of our past entries found that this site contained well over 350 posts, which cover a variety of subjects from thoughts on writing, tips, book reviews, updates about our own works, etc.. etc…

I then thought about our readers, especially those who were new to the blog, and how difficult it would be to try and find a particular post or topic.  This would be a daunting task considering the fact that most of the posts were created on my mood at the time, which means they’re are pretty much spread willy-nilly throughout the blog.

Clearly something had to be done.  Some semblance of order was needed to make things easier for all.  So I set about adding menu buttons and linking specific posts to each in order to make the site easier to navigate. To date, the following menu selections are up and running:

“Musings of Two Creative Minds”

(technically not a button, you just click on the name of the site to get to the main blog)

“About Us”

(Kind of self-explanatory)

“Para-Earth Books”

(synopsis of our books and links to where you can get them)

“What We’ve Been Reading”

(links to all the books we’ve reviewed by other authors)

“About Writing and Self-Publishing”

(Mostly finished – still have 2 years of posts to link to this button:  but this is where you’ll find posts about specific topics, along with our experiences and thoughts on the writing process)

However there are still some buttons that are not fully up and running yet.

“Reviews”

(what others are saying about our books)

and finally

“Coming Soon”

(It pretty much speaks for itself)

Again, there are over 350 posts to sort and get links established, so please be patient.  I can safely say that all this reworking of the blog has given me ideas for at least several entries to share with you all in the near future.  In the meantime, please try the buttons out and give us some feedback on what you think of the new layout.  Is it helpful?  Does it make things easier to find?

Finally, we want to let you know that we have big plans for this blog and that other new features will be added in the coming months including videos, and possibly some audio-readings as well.  So please bear with us as this will take a little while, especially as we’re moving into a new apartment which is taking up a lot of our time.  But we’ll try to keep posting new things here in the meantime.  We have a little cache of entries which we’ll be parceling out to keep you all amused.

So stay tuned and keep writing!

As most of you know by now, I’ve started work on my third novel.  What makes this book different though is the fact that I’m writing in the first person instead of the third person.  In the third person one tends to do a lot of “he said,” “She smiled”, etc.  Whereas the first person is a bit more personal in my opinion.

Just about all writers like to let the audience inside their characters heads.  Some will do it in the “omniscient” style, where they let  reader see inside every characters head in the same scene all at once.  We’re allowed to know what they’re thinking, even if they don’t share their thoughts with the other characters.  Or  the author will let you inside one character’s head at a time.  This is called ‘limited perspective’ which is what I use a lot, where I only let you inside one character’s mind at a time, even within the same scene.  But I’ll indicate the ‘change’ of who’s head you’re inside of by putting a space break between paragraphs and clearly letting the audience know who’s point of view we’re now watching through.

However, in first person perspective, you get a narrator who tells the entire story.  You’ll see a lot of “I said…”, “I thought…” etc. etc.  While powerful, this point of view can be limiting since the audience can only know what the narrator knows.  We don’t get inside the heads of the other characters to see what they’re thinking, unless the author switches narrators between chapters.  This is kind of what I’m doing with “The Vampyre Blogs”.

Like a real blog, the entire book is made up of entries, only in this case they are created by the different characters.  Each speaking in the first person perspective.  Bram Stoker used this style in “Dracula” and it worked really well.  Since I’m doing a vampire piece, using the same style seemed only natural.

But what I didn’t count on was how much fun I’m having with this style.  With each entry, I get to play with a new character.  Now, I took theater back in high school and had a blast with it.  I’m finding doing these ‘blog entries’ by different characters to be a lot like my theater experience.  I really get inside whichever character’s entry I’m working on, and get to be them.  I really get a chance to see through their eyes and get to know them in a deeper way than I have with my characters in the past.  Then when I’m done with that entry, I get to take mentally shed that character and don another persona and repeat the process.  I sometimes feel like I’m doing a one man show in front of an audience.  Only I’m doing it from behind a computer screen instead of being on stage.

Now I know for a lot of writers, getting inside a character’s head is normal.  I did it for my other novels, but as I mentioned just a little while ago, I feel like I’m getting to really know my characters more in depth than before.  Will I be able to keep going this deep when I return to the third person perspective?  I don’t know, yet.  I hope so.  Because I’m really enjoying the experience.  Just so long as I don’t get too caught up with them and lose myself so to speak.

This whole experience is a fascinating journey of discovery for me.  What have some of your experiences with writing and getting to know your characters been like gang?  I’d love to hear about it.  Please feel free to share your experiences with the rest of us in the comments section below.

I’m afraid this is all I have to share for now.  Take care and keep writing everyone!

I’ ve had few people ask me a question about my vampyre blog recently.  They’ve been wondering why I use the words “Private Edition” in the title.  The answer is simple.  I didn’t want that blog to have the same exact name as my novel out of concern that I might confuse some of my readers.  Since they are connected, I wanted the two to sound similar without being identical.  And personally speaking, I’m glad I chose “The Vampyre Blogs–Private Edition” for the title of the blog.  It seems appropriate since none of the entries appearing on that blog will be showing up in the actual novel.

The entries I post there are simply for the enjoyment of the readers.  They are a bit of free background info on some of the characters, as well as scenes that can be considered free short-stories.

I’ve already decided that since that blog has already had over 400 views in the month and a half that it was put up, I will continue to keep it going even after the novel comes out in December of this year.  I find I enjoy doing these little shorts about my vampyre and the people who’s lives touch his.

I also plan on doing more novels with him, if the first one does well.

So in the meantime, come see what’s been happening at his dance club “The Crypt”.  There’s always something going on down there, be it big or small.  The doors are open, and you’re invited…

They Crypt 3

Just put up a new entry over on my WordPress version of “The Vampyre Blogs”.

Today, I have my vampire’s godson talking about him.  I thought it might be nice for all of you to see Nathaniel, through the eyes of someone who’s known him for years.

Nathaniel’s been in a kind of dark mood on his entries, but he’s not always like that.    He’s rather a fun fellow, just kind of shy.

So why not come over and see a different side of the man who’s walked this earth for over a 150 years.

I’ve had requests from several readers about new blog site for “The Vampyre Blogs”. More than a few lamented the fact that I had created the blog under Blogger instead of using WordPress. So, I have created a mirror site with the same exact content under WordPress. I hope this will be all right with everyone.Note: I am NOT taking down the Blogger site, it will remain and the two will be updated simultaneously whenever I create a new post.

This may sound kind of like strange thing to do, but for my readers I’m willing to make the effort. To me, it’s no different than putting my novels out both in Kindle and Nook Formats. Everyone has their own preference and I’m just trying to accommodate my fans.

Thanks for your attention. For those of you who are WordPress followers, here’s the link to the new site. I hope you enjoy and look forward to your comments and reactions to the characters.

Why The Video Posts Allan?

Greetings all.  I’m sure everyone has been noticing I’ve been putting up more and more videos lately as opposed to my usual entries.  Well, part of the reason for this was to get more traffic to come to my Vlog on YouTube.  But there is another reason.

Those of you who watched the video on my last entry: https://akrummenacker.wordpress.com/2012/09/27/another-entry-about-character-creating/will already know what I’m about to say.  I have a chronic pain condition.  The doctor who diagnosed me gave me a sad smile as he said, “The good news is that it won’t kill you.  But you’ll be in pain the rest of your life.”  The condition is known as Fibromyalgia and based on my own research over the years and from speaking with experts, I’ve had this since childhood.  I’ve always suffered pain more readily and easier than my peers back in grade school.  No one ever believed me when I told them how much I hurt especially after one of the numerous bully assaults because of my apparent weakness and vulnerability.  I was never good at sports even when I tried my damnedest to get good.  My muscles never responded correctly.  I was clumsy and awkward and on rare days when I was feeling ‘good’ I was able to excel in ways no one could believe.  But then a day or so later I’d be back to my usual lower performing standards no matter how HARD I tried to push myself.  I was tired a lot as well, which comes with being in pain.

Now let me point out that the pain levels I normally experience are the kind of low (somethings off but it’s not going to get in my way) kind of thing.  They can take their toll but I’ve found exercise routines that really work for me without exacerbating the pain.  I’ve taken a lot of dance and have learned a lot of core and endurance building exercises that have helped a lot.  But even these are no match for when the Fibromyalgia comes out of its remission stage and goes into “FLARE”.

During “Flare” the pain levels shoot up and my motor skills become clumsy and awkward.  I feel terribly drained and even have to resort to using a walking stick to get around (even inside my home).  Even putting my thoughts together can be difficult, as if I were trapped in a fog which is why this particular symptom is referred to as FIBROFOG.  Overall, it’s like having a terrible case of the flu with the deep body aches and fatigue, without the high temp or other symptoms.

Now, what does all this have to do with the videos?  Simple.  I have limited energy reserves during these periods.  And what little I feel up to doing is getting through my college classes and my daily life period.  I budget my reserves and try to focus on writing my novels as best I can (the Fibrofog can mess me up on that front something fierce and I can’t really write some days even though I want to).  During periods like the one I’m going through now, it’s easier to sit and talk rather than type.  And since I don’t want to neglect all of you who’ve been so kind and generous with your comments and views, I’ve been resorting to the videos.

So, now you know what’s really been going on.  I hope you all understand and I hope this particular ‘Flare’ will soon pass.  Until it does please bear with me.  I will still be posting in one form or the other.

In the meantime I’m going to take advantage of my being a writer to bring up another subject.  In my earlier entries I talked about giving your characters skills, hobbies, talents you have or someone you know has to help make them more real to your readers.  The same still holds true with bad stuff.  Losing a loved one, a bad childhood, an unhappy relationship, or having a health condition.

Now I’ve already started using my personal knowledge of dealing with Fibromyalgia with one of the characters in my novels.  Her name is Cassandra Elliott, a billionaire heiress with a heart of gold.  With looks, beauty and money, she would seem to have it all.  But Epstein-Barr plagues her, depriving her of love of dance and other activities by making her bed-ridden for days or weeks at a time.  She hates the feeling of helplessness and being an invalid at times.  But how she deals with her condition helps shape the person she’s become and her drive to be as normal as possible especially around her new love interest.

We’re all shaped by our experiences.  Good or bad, how we react to them helps make us the people we are.  So look into your own life sometimes for sources of material to help shape and make your characters into real people.  People your readers can relate to and want to keep reading about and cheer on.

Thanks for reading, sorry this post is so long, but I felt it necessary to address some of the concerns I’ve been reading in the comment sections or in private messages.  Take care everyone and I hope to have another entry up shortly.
