Here is a rough vine charcoal sketch/design for the cover of my first novel “THE BRIDGE”. I’m not happy with the top half so I’m going to have another go and put in a figure of a woman with incredibly long flowing hair. Like in this image, her hair will stretch down to ground and further down the stonework to create the the words of the title. The other words will be put in during editing of the image. A dark stormy sky will be her backdrop. And all of this happens in the book itself. I like to be honest with my image content.

Cool. Wish I could sketch or draw. I have someone I am going to talk with next month about my cover. I had originally planned on a photo but that doesn’t seem to be working out at the moment. Still need some ideas. Originally the photo was going to be of a woman looking through a window. Now I may need to either buy stock art and do something with it or try something else. The cover is giving me more stress and grief than the book did.

I hear you there. Doing or choosing a cover can be a real pain, since we really want to impress the readers into checking our work out.

And the cover needs to draw them in to what you have written. I am hoping that after the holidays I can sketch (stick people is all I can really do) out some ideas that I can pass on to the one who is going to help me.

Dear Alan,
I’m quite impressed with your art of sketching. I can vividely imagine how it’s supposed to look like. But I have to admit: It scares me to death… This is not supposed to be a horror-novel, isn’t it??

Actually it’s a blend of horror/mystery/sci-fi all set in modern day. The figure on the cover is not the main villain of the piece, but a puppet who needs to be saved. With that, I say no more for fear of giving away too much. (wink)

Way to go on the cover, Allan, covers are important because it’s the first thing a reader sees of the book, and it’s usually the only visual. Perhaps make the bridge a little longer? Just an idea. Good luck!
